Take on the challenge of walking the 21-mile Preston Guild Wheel route in aid of Motor Neurone Disease this September.
The team at Lancashire and South Cumbria Motor Neurone Disease Care and Research Centre at Royal Preston Hospital, organises a sponsored walk every year, with proceeds split between Lancashire Teaching Hospitals Charity and the MND Association.
Since the event was launched in 2015, it has raised around £56,000 for the two charities. The Guild Wheel was chosen as the route for the first time in 2021.
Funds are used to support people living with MND in the Lancashire and South Cumbria area, as well as local and national research.
Event organiser Julie Sala, a clinical nurse specialist at Royal Preston Hospital, said: “The walk not only raises funds, but it raises lots of awareness to support this fatal disease.
“As a small team we are all extremely passionate about the wraparound care and support we provide for our patients and their families. This support begins at diagnosis and continues as the disease progresses.
“We need your help and support, so please come and join us and let’s make this the best year ever. You can sign up for the full walk or just a part of it. If walking’s not for you then please sponsor us!”
Lancashire Teaching Hospitals Charity helps to provide extra care and support for both staff and patients that is beyond core funding; including helping to refurbish hospital environments, installing state-of-the art equipment, and supporting research projects to improve people’s health outcomes.
Money raised for the hospital charity through the walk will be ringfenced for Care and Research Centre at Royal Preston Hospital.
Lancashire Teaching Hospitals Head of Charities Paula Wilson said: “This fantastic annual event makes a huge impact, both for educating people about Motor Neurone Disease and raising funds that support everything from local patient care to improving global understanding of the illness.
“Thank you and good luck to everybody taking on this 21-mile challenge for such a worthy cause.”
