Channel 5 documentary series Cause of Death, featuring several departments across Royal Preston Hospital, has been long-listed in the National Television Awards for Best Factual.
The Candour Productions series, which aired in October and November last year, was also filmed alongside the Coroner’s Office and Lancashire Police, following real life coronial investigations, medical processes and police investigations.
The series is one of 39 you can vote for in the category, and the NTA vote is currently open, until 11pm on Friday 2 June at nationaltvawards.com/vote
The resultant shortlist of nominees will be announced in August when the final round of voting begins.
Channel 5 has ordered two more series of Cause of Death, with filming currently underway at Royal Preston Hospital as well as at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust. The two 8 x 60 minutes series will air in 2023 and 2024.
Executive Producer, Anna Hall, said: “This has been a ground-breaking series to make – and we are thrilled that the sensitive work of the police; all the hospital staff and of course the Coroner and his officers have been recognised in telling these incredible stories.”
Naomi Duggan, Trust Director of Communications and Engagement, added: “A lot of hard work went into the series, with filming taking place over six months, at what was already a challenging time towards the end of the pandemic. This is welcome news and reward for the cooperation and understanding of colleagues – the series helped shine a light on what is a very significant and interesting role within the NHS.”
The first series attracted a consolidated average audience of 1.6m per episode and helped to showcase a number of medical processes, with one episode in particular that focussed on organ transplants increasing blood donations by over 300%.
