Patients, families and staff at Royal Preston Hospital had a treat on Tuesday as radio legend Tony Blackburn performed a two-hour slot on Preston Hospital Radio.
The BBC DJ – whose career spans six decades – played requests and read out dedications from 2-4pm, as well as recalling stories from his time on the airwaves, including meeting Frank Sinatra and Gene Pitney!
The Trust’s Stefanie Johnson, Head of Recruitment & Volunteers, had appealed for guest presenters on Scott Mills’ breakfast show on BBC Radio 2, with Richie Anderson appearing from 7-30-8-30am, before Blackburn was also asked to fill in, saying: “Yes I can! I’ve never done hospital radio in my life before, but I would look forward to it. I was in hospital last year and with everything they did for me, I think it’s the least I can do. A bit of payback!”
Speaking after the show, he added: “I feel incredibly lucky to be able to do what I do and I know how important hospital radio is to the patients and their families, so it was my absolute pleasure to present a show on Royal Preston Hospital Radio.
“It was an honour to read out their messages and play the songs that will brighten their day ahead of Radio 2 in the Park this weekend.”
Radio 2’s flagship live music weekend is in nearby Moor Park from Friday to Sunday, with Sting and Pet Shop Boys headlining the event.
Stefanie was thrilled to have such special guests on Preston Hospital Radio, which is manned by volunteers: “What a day to remember. The day Radio 2 came to Preston Hospital Radio and received a right Preston welcome from me and our team of volunteer presenters!
“Thanks to Tony Blackburn, Richie Anderson and everyone from the BBC Radio 2 shows - we’ve loved having you.”
Silas Nicholls, Trust Chief Executive, added: “The Hospital Radio volunteers at Royal Preston Hospital provide a fantastic service, lifting the spirits of patients, families and staff, and it was great to host Richie Anderson and the legendary Tony Blackburn.
“To have them step in and assist with our shows was a fantastic surprise for all, ahead of what is set to be an exciting weekend for BBC Radio 2 in Preston.”
