Trust excels again in National Cancer Patient Experience Survey

Stats Square imageLancashire Teaching Hospitals – the regional cancer centre - has again excelled in the National Cancer Patient Experience Survey, maintaining an overall Patient Experience score of 9/10 for the third year running, with no scores below the national average.

This year’s findings continue the sequence of the most positive results the Trust have had in this national survey. The survey was completed by 808 patients, with the outcome, published recently, reporting a response rate above the national average.

The national survey, first undertaken in 2010, allows cancer patients to give feedback on the care they have received and provides insight into the views and experience of care of people affected by cancer.

This feedback is used to understand where care is working well, and how NHS cancer services across England can be improved. Results from the survey are used by providers to improve the experience of cancer patients at a national, regional, and local level. The survey is run by Picker on behalf of NHS England.

The National Cancer Patient Experience Survey 2023 was designed to monitor progress on cancer care; to provide information to drive local quality improvements; to assist commissioners and providers of cancer care; and to inform the work of the various charities and stakeholder groups supporting cancer patients.

Scores above the expected range and national average included the following:

  • Patient had a main point of contact
  • Enough understandable information regarding chemotherapy and radiotherapy
  • Good information in how to deal with side effects of treatment
  • Right amount of information and support given regarding follow up and possible signs of recurrence

The Trust did not have any scores below the expected range, and the survey also demonstrated improvements in many areas.

Anne Tomlinson, Lead Nurse, Cancer & End of Life Care, said: “I am really proud of all the cancer health professionals that work so hard to try to ensure all our patients with cancer receive excellent care.

“I am also grateful to all those who participated in the survey. Although this survey is very positive, we are always striving to provide excellent care with compassion, and the responses in the survey, including the free text responses, really help us to focus on the areas where we need to improve.”
