Oncology research nurse Steph Ellison is on the run for the sake of her patients!
Steph, who works at Rosemere Cancer Centre, Lancashire and South Cumbria’s specialist cancer treatment and radiotherapy centre at the Royal Preston Hospital, has won a place in this October’s London Marathon after six consecutive years of applying through its entry ballot.
Now in training, she has set herself two targets – to finish within four and a half hours and to raise at least £500 for charity Rosemere Cancer Foundation to support research projects at the cancer centre.
Steph, who has set up an online fundraising page at https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/19924_8565821_33751, said: “We all more than likely know someone who is or has been affected by cancer. Rosemere Cancer Foundation is a charity I am passionate about raising money for so that we can fund more research to provide more effective cancer treatments in the hope of providing a better future for cancer patients.”
Steph, who has been running on and off for the last seven years and has taken part in 5ks, 10ks and half marathons before but never a marathon, will have to fit her training in around planning her wedding to fiance Luke, which was meant to happen last October but which was postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Steph added: “I find running clears my mind, allowing me thinking time pre or post work. I enjoy taking in the views when running and love the peace and quiet away from everything.”
Rosemere Cancer Foundation works to bring world class cancer treatments and services to cancer patients from throughout Lancashire and South Cumbria being treated not only at Rosemere Cancer Centre but also at another eight local hospital cancer units across the two counties.
The charity funds cutting edge equipment, research, training and other cancer services and therapies that the NHS is unable to afford to make patients’ cancer journey more effective, comfortable and stress-free.
