Diabetes is a long-term condition caused by too much glucose (a type of sugar), in the blood. Nearly three million people in the UK have diabetes, and it is likely that a further one million may be undiagnosed. Good control of diabetes is very important to prevent long term complications of diabetes, for example blindness, kidney failure, amputation, heart attack and stroke.
Our Diabetes Service diagnoses and treats diabetes and its complications. General and specialist diabetes clinics, including young people’s, pregnancy, and foot are held throughout the week at the Diabetes Centre at Chorley and South Ribble Hospital, Royal Preston Hospital and Minerva Centre. The diabetes team includes specialist consultants and specialist nurses, and other professionals provide additional care and advice including podiatrist , clinical psychologist and dieticians. They work very closely with various other specialities to provide the best care for people with diabetes.
You can access the Diabetes Services via a referral from your GP.
