- The Anaesthetics Department
The anaesthetics department works as a unified multidisciplinary team to provide world-class treatment and personalised care for every patient. The anaesthetics service works together with our surgical, medical and obstetric colleagues to provide cutting edge care, delivered with compassion.
We have been designated a Major Trauma Centre and a Tertiary Vascular Centre, and as a Cancer Centre, we are continuously expanding the treatment we provide.
In the coming months our 24 bed Critical Care Unit will expand to 34 beds, to provide a better working environment and facility for our patients.
We also provide acute and chronic pain services, with a team of specialist nurses.
Speciality specific pre-operative assessment clinics are run regularly to ensure appropriate patient preparation, both nurse and anaesthetist led. We also provide a thorough CPEX testing service for risk stratification on our more complex patients. Our job plans include time dedicated to perioperative visiting and assessment of patients. We meet regularly as a department and as subspecialty groups to network, share best practice, and drive innovation, and are research-active.

The anaesthetics team has grown, with the appointment of additional consultants and the recent establishment of a duty (floating) anaesthetist role.
Our structure is based on the Royal College of Anaesthetists perioperative model. We have accreditation for training of BMS staff and medically qualified histopathologists and neuropathologists.
