At Lancashire Teaching Hospitals, we feel very lucky to be the regional providers for several fantastic, specialised services, which we run alongside our general, acute care. Find out more about how we care for our wider community below:
Adult Allergy & Clinical Immunology Department
The Adult Allergy & Clinical Immunology Department is a regional service and serves a population of approximately 1.6 million people. The service is Specialised Commissioned for both Adult Allergy and Immunology. The department sees and manages various allergic conditions ( allergic rhinitis, food allergy, drug allergy, anaesthetic allergy, anaphylaxis, latex allergy, bee or wasp sting allergies, urticaria and angioedema) and various immunological conditions (primary immunodeficiencies and C1 inhibitor deficiency). Specialist Mobility Rehabiliation Centre
Our specialist mobility rehabilitation centre provides specialist wheelchair, prosthetic limb and orthotic services for people across the North West, including war veterans. We also have our own gym on site to match our patients needs during their recovery.
Cancer Centre
Our cancer centre is one of the biggest in the country. Run in partnership with the Rosemere Cancer Foundation, our cancer centre offers the best care and maximum support to cancer patients and their families; it also works with our dedicated research teams to run leading programmes that develop new, outcome-improving treatments for people with cancer. Our cancer centre is a modern, welcoming environment that provides specialist surgery, radiotherapy, drug therapies, palliative care and a range of other support. We also work with Macmillan to provide expert advice and host support sessions for anyone whose life has been affected by cancer. Our cancer centre has also taken delivery of a state-of-the-art robot cancer surgeon, which will help our surgeons be the first in the North West to access difficult-to-reach parts of the body using keyhole incisions and perform advanced treatments on patients with gastrointestinal, bowel, and gynaecological cancers.
Specialist Renal Centre
Our specialist renal centre provides treatment and care for patients across Lancashire and South Cumbria who have kidney (renal) problems, such as renal failure, vasculitis, nephrotic syndrome, and anaemia. Our centre has a high dependency care unit for patients with single organ failure, and provides vascular surgery, interventional radiology, renal biopsy, plasma exchange, immunosuppressive therapy and dialysis. We also provide care before and after kidney transplants, and we are one of the first places in the country to introduce new state-of-the-art home video technology, which means many dialysis patients can now receive treatment at home if they wish.
Major Vascular Centre
Our major vascular centre provides our region with a state-of-the-art hybrid theatre, a specialist vascular ward, a vascular laboratory and specialist rehabilitation facilities. As of 2016, our Major Vascular Centre became a centralised service that provides full support to three arterial partner hospitals, with 10 surgeon consultants working on a successful weekly system.
Major Trauma Centre
Our major trauma centre provides life and limb-saving treatment to adult patients across Lancashire and South Cumbria. We have a Major Trauma Ward on our Preston site and now have a dedicated team of Major Trauma Nurses, who are skilled in nursing backgrounds of Accident and Emergency, Plastics (Trauma) and Trauma Orthopaedics, and provide a five-day service to act as patient liasions and attend trauma calls.
